SHAT April 13, 2003, 1:14

hey joshua, the tab worked out just fine for me after i put it all together.
thanks bro

Jon Ivy April 13, 2003, 1:29

White Stipes Rox!
No Bass player.

Only Jack White on Guitar and vocals with his ex-wife on drums.

dobbs April 13, 2003, 1:43

while there is no bass player in the band that does not mean jack white doesn't own a bass. clearly it is in the bass range so it is either a bass or a guitar with a lot of effects on it

mook April 14, 2003, 2:39

Josh your tab was pretty much perfect great job

cakes April 14, 2003, 2:47

lee April 14, 2003, 15:30

ana is right..its definately not bass.

lee April 14, 2003, 15:32

ana is right, it ain't bass..

james April 14, 2003, 15:54

It's definately guitar. It's in the bass range because Jack's using an octave pedal - I saw the band do this live on Friday night and it was all on guitar.

Chuffy April 14, 2003, 19:28

I saw them last night in london, not a bass in site!

Me April 14, 2003, 20:30

It is done with a guitar and an octive pedal Yo!

Matty Ramone April 15, 2003, 10:25

Love this song!!-The thing that gets me about this song is, during the chorus you can still here the so called intro "bass/guitar" riff under the chorus full guitar riff so although he is playing only guitar it sounds like first a cool bass riff the the guitar kicks in for the chorus with the drums and bass underlineing the guitar any way thats my 2cents

clare styles April 15, 2003, 12:52

its it a base with and octave pedel. jack white has said so in so many interviews

MANNY WHITE April 15, 2003, 16:32

IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT YOU MORONS THINK ALL THAT MTTERS IS THAT IS A KICK ASS CD NO QUESTION ASKED, HOW THEY MAKE IT ALL SOUND IS PURE TALENT ON JACKS BEHALF. SO QUIT TRYNG TO FIGURE IF HE USES A BASS OR NOT YOU FIBERS!!!!!

jock itch April 16, 2003, 5:02

dude, its not a bass or a guitar, its barry white

ahhhh yeah, can you dig it!

its a bass, its a guitar...shananananana your_mom

name April 16, 2003, 18:06

maybe ive been secretly moved onto another planet but isnt a bass just the first four strings of a normal 6-string guitar (EADG) i know they sound differnet, but turn the bass up and it sounds right. In the vid he has a 6-string but he needs it cos he plays the solo to high up for a bass so bassists can just play the main riff which i rekon is

MOO!

willjo April 17, 2003, 19:43

Its definatly guitar ive got the real tab on seven nation army 2 if i CAN GET IT ON THATS THE REAL TAB

willjo April 17, 2003, 20:42

Yep ive just submitted the tab now all enjoy!!

idm63 April 17, 2003, 20:49

satanat is clearly right i tried each of the tabs with my ovtave pedal and it sounds awesome. if you dont have a ovtave pedal i suggest you turn your mid and treble tones all the way down and your bass tone up all the way to achieve the right sound. so quit arguing!!!

Dan April 17, 2003, 22:05

This song is actually played in a major key tuning with a slide. Watch the video for seven nation army if you dont believe me. most of the tabs are right on the money tho. and yes, it is an octave pedal that jack uses.

ant April 17, 2003, 22:18

i went to a white stripes gig and he played seven nation army on an acoustic guitar not a bass!!!!so all of you people who say it is a bass can shut up!!!!!!

Mike Hunt April 18, 2003, 21:38

Does Jack still use fisher price guitars and sears amps?
BTW Jack, I believe they are real.

paddy April 19, 2003, 15:05

r u sure its a guitar i thought i was a cello.
wat muppet could possibly think that hes playing bass a man that can play bass with his feet now thats incredible!

Guitarboy April 19, 2003, 22:45

Its a guitar! Look at d vid, its d guitar, no further Qs bout wether its bass!

Noel April 19, 2003, 23:22

We saw them last week 4/15 and 4/16 in Detroit, and though it sounds like a bass, it isn't. He uses an octave pedal, like all the other geniuses have already figured out!!

ben April 20, 2003, 23:49

does anyone know how i could get the tabs for "you got her in you pocket" - elephant?

white stiper April 21, 2003, 16:30

Yeah, leo is right, they're a brother and sister act. People thought they we're ex's back when they came out, but if you read a few articles or go to their website, you'll find out that they're brother and sister.

alan April 21, 2003, 21:48

its a plam muted guitar, probably in open G tuning
and the like to think of themselves as brother and sister, but they grew up together, married in thier teens, realised they bwere more like brother and sister. end of story. open g tuning, as in the video, he just plays the strings open at one point. and no way would there ever be bass

Stuart April 22, 2003, 12:22

My tab is correct, but it is transcribed the same as:

e------------------
B------------------
D------------------
G------------------
A-7--7h10-7--------
E------------10-8-7

The way he Jack plays it is how I tabbed it before:D And I think thought they were brother and sister...but somehow became incestial and married...thank god i was wrong :D

dude April 22, 2003, 21:51

he plays bass, guitar, drums, and octave pedal

April 23, 2003, 2:50

I'm Right April 23, 2003, 23:02

Actually, they are NOT related. Jack White's real name is John Gillis.

If you don't believe me, search for "John Gillis" on google.

I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!

Colin April 24, 2003, 2:05

Good thing we finally figure out it was an octave pedal. Though the video doesn't mean shit, they just play over the studio track, but I just saw him play this song on conan 5 minutes ago, and indeed it was a guitar. And no they aren't brother and sister you fucktards, look it up.

skaboy April 25, 2003, 19:46

i agree, get a life! who cares! play wat sounds right, simple if u can actually play the instrument

Phill April 25, 2003, 22:24

This site is for guitar tabs not bass tabs so who cares bout bass, and theres only two ppl in band.... what more can i say

Jack White April 25, 2003, 23:50

hey boys i just wanted to post this add to tell you that theres no need to fight for the damn tab or if theres a bass , but no there is no bass

and the beginning goes like this
E----------------------------
b----------------------------
g----------------------------
d----------------------------
a----------------------------
e--7-7-10-7-5-3--2-----------

dr phill April 26, 2003, 0:47

lets get this straight, yes its a guitar with an octave petal, but the guitar must be in another tunning. He plays the chorus using a slider and to create a chrod using a slide you can only use one fret so play something like this:
d-------7
a-------7
e-------5
is impossible with a slider therefore the guitar is in a different tunning

Jesus' Buddy April 26, 2003, 13:50

It doesn't matter which of these tabs you use, or which string you play it on as any idiot knows if you fret the bottom E at the 5th fret, it is the same as an open A, genius. Also, he does use an octave pedal, and also an overdubbed guitar to play the riff over and over ad nauseam. This band are supposed to be retro rock, instead they are poor imitations. If I wanted to listen to retro rock, I'd listen to the bands they're actually copying. The Who, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones also tended to change the song as it progressed, rather than repeating one (bad) riff. I hope they learn to play their instruments properley before their next and final album, otherwise they're wasting a good recording studio in London.

jimmy guitar/bass April 26, 2003, 21:07

look all you friggen morons, first, the white stripes did NOT copy the beatles, the who, or the rolling stones, second the drummer is not his ex-wife AND sister, third, there is no bass in the bad, and fourth if youll scroll your lazy ass back up to Joshua's tab, its correct

GT April 27, 2003, 5:53

You are all losers! Stop arguing over something so frikkin stupid and just play the thing!

someone April 27, 2003, 13:52

my thoughts exactly

Eric April 27, 2003, 19:01

does anybody have the solo??
i want to play this song with my band...but...i need the solo, if u have it, send it to: eric_lacelle@hotmail.com
thx

Sledge April 27, 2003, 21:19

Yeah Josh nailed the whole song...but the solo needs work...anybody figured it out yet...

BTW its not a bass or a guitar it's a harpsicord.

ggg April 28, 2003, 15:07

look, you all sometimes argue when there is nothing to argue, because someone plays it in a different tone, but it's the same....

SANDMAN April 28, 2003, 22:48

Dan well done on the tab!!!
Finally a a brain in the bunch... for the rest of you...DropD Should put everything else together for you.
I learned this song the first time I heared it.
DropD and pull your head outta yer ass!!!!
Be creative and make your own music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SANDMAN April 28, 2003, 22:51

OH YEAH!!!!
No BASE EITHER DROP D

mitch April 29, 2003, 13:19

i think that it starts on the B as most people have written then the middle bit is G to A and then for the chorus it is played in E on the 7th fret on the A string. Anyone know the solo??? e -mail me. PS it is played on guitar cuz there are only two people in the band. MEG AND JACK...never heard of effects pedals. dickheads.

rob April 29, 2003, 21:23

it's not drop d
it's a nifty thing called an octave guitar in which i think the low E string is tuned down a whole octave. but i don't know what the rest of the strings are
it's definitely not standard tuning, cus he uses a slide

Eric Killebrew April 30, 2003, 5:45

ShAfTeD April 30, 2003, 13:39

i agree with Baitsen..... im playing it now and it sounds fine... and if it is wrong....go to a different site for tabs....

thom April 30, 2003, 15:33

hey, it sounds like a bass, but its really him using an octave pedal to sound lower, but he changes it when he goes into the rest of the song.

Bucko April 30, 2003, 21:48

I don't know if anyone saw Conan last week, but when they jammed this song, it was definetly with the octave pedal. But regarding the tuning, it's standard. I followed his fingerings and could play along with them identically, obviously one octave higher, cause I don't own one of those pedals. Food for thought.

Kick ass May 1, 2003, 18:43

The seven nation army (3) is the most accurate, even though the solo isnt perfect. This tab is wrong.

Mr. dude May 1, 2003, 22:32

I saw jack play the song on Conan and he used a guitar slide for the solo and the solo is preety much the same thing as the chorus, but one octave higher

Hmm... May 1, 2003, 23:43

Ok, 2 things seem obvious to me here... Am I alone?

This song is obviously either played with a 7 string guitar, OR it's run through an octave dropper (effects pedal, etc). As far as the KEY, standard tuning matches this:
------------------
------------------
------------------
-----5------------
-7-7---7-5-3---2--
------------------

chorus matches pretty easily. Maybe that will clear SOMETHING up? I mean people, it's not like it's a competition; just offer up stuff :)

Eric May 2, 2003, 2:54

ok wait a sec...i love this song yet i have a question...everyone says that he has a pedal with an octave thing on it..well i own a DigiTech GNX 1 and i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get to his octave or tuning...and what tuning exactly is this song in cause in the pre chorus he is playing like a g then totally open..thx!

Tang May 3, 2003, 7:46

Yall do know The White Stripes dont use a base in any of there songs? K thnx bye

And its a guitar they dont use a bass!!

E-cord May 5, 2003, 16:26

6-string guitar, intro played intirely on the A string (live) and yes he uses an octave pedal and no one cares if they are related and is this lick all so important that it has to be played EXACTLEY like the writer playes it?? Oivay! And yes there are also a couple of decent blues tunes on the CD.Check out ZW's "Black Lable Society's" newest CD for some legitimate guitar accomplishments...CIAO, baby.

Peacemaker May 5, 2003, 21:28

ok..if you guys watched Conan like you should...the Stripes were on all week last week and played this song. The tab that the guy posted is correct...it's just Jack's guitar and he plays it just like the original tab displays. Have a great day...listen to more tom petty

Shoobe-Doobe-Doo-Wop May 6, 2003, 4:27

The funniest thing on here was the comment about Barry White....aaah yeah, can ya dig it? Anyway, you gave me a lot of information on the White Stripes. There's no bass in this song...they aren't ex-husband and wife...they played on Conan...London has a good recording studio...the Who and The Beatles were mentioned...and the nude dude is a coo dude with a fresh attitude. Thanks for tabbing this about five million times for me...and for keeping the conversation alive. It was really entertaining! CKY force change now

sel0tape May 7, 2003, 1:16

You're never gonna get it exactly right cos jack uses a 7-string guitar with a B-string below the low E string. Just incase you have a tasty B-string its

B:-5-5-8-5-3-1-0.

If you just have a 6 string just play

A:-7-7-10-7-5-3-2

on the A-string, its an octave higher but the notes are right.

Bill May 8, 2003, 23:25

Stu is right. So is sel0tape. The rest of you are are totally off!!!

ben May 10, 2003, 22:17

the intro goes.....

7-7-12-9-5-3--2

Glasshead May 11, 2003, 14:29

Just play it.. its a simple song.. a ten year old kid could work it out.. The Audio Engineer who recorded the track is the only one who knows wats going on.. so move on...(start playing your own music)

drew_in_a_haze May 11, 2003, 17:17

hello. just thought i'd add my comment as everyone else (it seems to be the popular choice these days). now, i have two questions. are you guys shure its not a fiddle he's playing with? oh and question no. two. how come you never see the white stripes wear pink. i mean come on, there's gotta be at least ONE red sock mixed up in all that white wash. besides, i bet meg wears black underwear. well i'm out!!

keith harvey May 11, 2003, 18:39

Since i've been in many bands and am an aspiring music producer i can say for definate it IS a BASS. people in studios like to make their albums sound fuller, especially in the white stripes case, so jack uses a bass for the ryhthm of the whole song, overdubs with a guitar. Obviously when they play live they are a two piece band so he will play it with just the guitar, using an octive pedal if he so pleases.
He would have used a bass on the album version instead of a guitar/octive pedal simply due to the fact that a bass sounds a hell of a lot better and Jack probably has some damn fine basses that he like to play as a change from the guitar!!!

brad May 12, 2003, 8:05

none of you are right i'm afraid.

the guitar is strung to open G: d,b,G,D,G,D

the chorus is played with a slide like thus;
d|-9--9/12--9--7--5--4--|
b|-9--9/12--9--7--5--4--|
G|-9--9/12--9--7--5--4--|
D|-9--9/12--9--7--5--4--|
G|-9--9/12--9--7--5--4--|
D|----------------------|

d|-9--9/12--9--7--5/7\5--4--|
b|-9--9/12--9--7--5/7\5--4--|
G|-9--9/12--9--7--5/7\5--4--|
D|-9--9/12--9--7--5/7\5--4--|

Ben May 14, 2003, 15:37

it is a bass--they say so in Rolling Stone magazine--if you think it is not a bass you're an idiot--i don't care what they play live, they recorded a bass--check out my band at www.angelfire.com/rebellion/thesecondhand

Sam May 18, 2003, 23:59

um...ok

Daniel May 19, 2003, 20:50

On the CD you can hear a bass, but on the CD you can also here two guitars! Jack plays more tracks on the CD. You have no chance to hear the correct LIVE Version. Look at the video and you will see he plays:
(palm muted)
------------------
------------------
------------------
-----5------------
-7-7---7-5-3---2--
------------------
and he have to play it like this, because he haves a bottleneck on his small finger.
And after this he played the solo or bridge or what ever, with his bottleneck, but I couldn't see this in the fast Video, my suggestion is to
drop the high e into d and play with the bottleneck:
D(complete Open)
A
and then
E G E D C Cb
E G E D C D C Cb
and than back
D(complete Open)
A
and than back to the Riff

Its quite good and very near on the original, but i cant hear how the solo of the second guitar works.

Maybe I will see Jack live, and then i'got it :-)

I no!! May 19, 2003, 21:25

try this, play the 1st string on the 5th fret, then play the next string, sound the same?? so all versions are right as u can play 2 strings 2 make the same note! i thort all guitarists new this!!!

bc cool May 20, 2003, 13:41

good good if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed and feel on your giutar

me May 21, 2003, 2:26

You are all complete idiots for arguing whether the intro is played with a guitar or bass. The name of the web site is e-tabs.org, not imcompletellyretarded.org. Get a life and just play the song!

THE 1 AND ONLY May 22, 2003, 23:59

A-men brotha

CAN I HAVE AN A-MEN

Patrick June 1, 2003, 21:47

This is wrong. The beggining sounds very high. Its supposed to be low.

sponge bob June 4, 2003, 3:06

the songs goes like this!
E-5-5-8-5-3-1-0
DUH!

Rightfreud June 7, 2003, 16:27

I can't help but notice the bass/guitar debate.I can tell you that there is no way that there is any bass in most any (if any at all) white stripes songs. The guy is a fanatic, he builds his own guitars and amps, and thrives on the simplicity of his music. Do your research. Why put an extra instrument where an effect pedal will do?

ben June 7, 2003, 18:21

hey if u didnt know it is a bass at the start cuz some guy put bass lines on there song so it goes like this:
E 7 6
A 6 6 9 8 6
D
G
ther ya are.

demonhnuter June 8, 2003, 5:15

all of these tabs sound the same and they are all good im an amateur i used to play:
E-0-1-3-1-3-1-1
A
D
g
b
e

Matt June 10, 2003, 15:32

AHHH im soooo confused... so many different people saying different things Ahhh if anyone is ABSOLUTLY sure they no the REAL GUITAR tab than please email me at Ronjon205@aol.com

DJ ecQubateR June 11, 2003, 19:26

try this one:

Bass:

E ------------------------
B ------------------------
G ------------------------
D ------------------------
A -7-7-10-7---------------
E ----------10-8-7--------

Guitar:

A A C A G F E
______________________________

or you could try this one.. it sounds a little more cool!!!

Bass:

E ------------------------
B ------------------------
G ------------------------
D ------------------------
A -7-7-10-7---------------
E ----------10-8-10-8-7---

Guitar:

A A C A G F G F E
______________________________

and thats it!!
NB: play it fast, if you cant play it to the cd.. if you dont it will sound a little strange!!!!!!!

This Is Pathetic June 12, 2003, 0:22

Come on you guys are just sad now. Just play it the way you think it should be played and stop arguing. Telling someone that their way is wrong isn't gonna make them play it any differently because they think your way is wrong so just SHUT UP!

This Is Pathetic June 12, 2003, 0:39

Also if you go to Band Info on www.whitestripes.net, you can read for yourself that there is no bass! Read for yourself: "One of a new breed of back-to-basics rock acts to emerge from Detroit, Michigan, USA, the White Stripes comprises enigmatic BASS-FREE duo Jack White (b. John White, Detroit, Michigan, USA; guitar/vocals) and Meg White (b. Detroit, Michigan, USA; drums)." Also you guys have been fighting about whether they are brother/sister or husband/wife so read this sentence taken from the same page: "The Whites, variously assumed to be brother and sister or husband and ex-wife, but both denied, formed their new band in 1997. Judging from their facial looks they probably are brother and sister." Maybe next time before you dumbasses post what you "think", you should find out if it's right. The source for all this info on the site is from MTV Online so it's probably true. Bye morons.

Bob June 12, 2003, 22:30

Try this with regular tuning on a guitar:

a----------5-3--2---
e-0--0-3-0----------

It also sounds good palm muted. It works for me so give it a try.

MArk June 13, 2003, 15:48

This MArk guy is messed up!Bob tab is awesome!

piechy June 15, 2003, 15:41

THE BASS IN THIS SONG IS THE BEST EVER!!!!!!!! I LOVE BASS......and i like andy's tabs.....well done *clap clap*

Shane-o June 15, 2003, 22:00

OPEN A TUNING!

Matt June 16, 2003, 22:57

Shane-O is correct. It's all in open A. This is how Jack uses a slide. Brad's open G works but goes kinda high on the neck. Everything in the song is based off the A string or chord. Jack drops the A string down an octave with a pedal when he plays live to sound like a bass. Oh, and the song uses whole chords, not crappy power chords. I for one, don't have to argue my points as I have the real ver. in my GW mag.

i am satan June 19, 2003, 22:20

this is what i use

E 7 7 10 7 5 3 5 2

Santa June 21, 2003, 3:58

Matt, just because you have the guitar world version of the tab doesent mean that that is the one and only almighty way of playing the song, its just that transcriptionist's interpretation of the song. It dosent mean that that white guy plays it that way either.

Santa June 21, 2003, 7:04

and by "that white guy" i mean jack or whatever his name is, i dont listen to them, i think they suck

bassist luver June 23, 2003, 8:39

although my name clearly states that i love bassists, the white stripes doesnt have a bassist... ive heard from someone...i donno if this rite or not...but jack plays a 7 string guitar...does neone noe if this is true????

B.I.G. June 23, 2003, 22:13

In response to the above, Jack does play a 7 string guitar.

NOONE HERE IS RIGHT June 23, 2003, 22:38

ok to everyone who clearly knows nothign about the white stripes, i MET jack and he gave me HIS tabs.....ON THE TOP STRING of the guitar it is played as follows:
7-7-10-7-5-3-2
it is played on a Gibson A320
6-STRING guitar on an octave pedal. he used the same guitar in recording. and they are brother and sister. thanks.

NO NO NO June 24, 2003, 1:04

it is NOT Bass it is just a palm mute and the guy with the name: NOONE HERE IS RIGHT

IS infact right so go practice ur sorry little @$$E$ OFF!

atomikaLbulletS37 June 24, 2003, 2:31

no bass!!! and its all guitar.... josh pick that tuning pretty well... so lets live it like that...

THE BANJO KING! June 24, 2003, 20:54

It's a banjo, A BANJO!

corey June 25, 2003, 0:59

i always thought it was a 7 string. or maybe a 6 string tuned like a 7 string.

but it isn't a bass

the octave pedal sounds reasonable

remember only 2 peeps in band
i kno the guy can sing and play guitar at same time but i dont think the girl can drum and play bass at same time

Jack White June 25, 2003, 16:15

Please stop fighting about how to play this song, just enjoy listening to it and buy the album!
peace......

666demonhunter June 26, 2003, 6:39

No bass

WhiteStripes #1 fan June 27, 2003, 3:13

it is a guitar with an octave pedal set to lower 1 octave , however you can do what sounds like a bass by goeing an octave lower on your bass it is the exact notes jack plays on his guitar just use this on your basses but go an octave lower the double dots are open EADG so if you have a capo use it imagen it is just a smaller fret board
G|----------------------||

yo momma June 27, 2003, 21:03

jim June 28, 2003, 3:50

goodgood

Mikey G June 28, 2003, 7:30

There is no bass in the song. All jack is doing is playing the guitat with an octave pedal with his wife playing drums, ive seen many tabs and comments, just watch the video, there is no bass. Its all jacks talent.

ws#1fan June 29, 2003, 3:36

mikey is right Jack White is the best.

TonePusher June 29, 2003, 16:59

I play like this on the E 5-5-7-5-3-1-0

or

5-5-7-5-3-1h3-0

to give it the little extra

Gilis June 29, 2003, 21:23

Stop Fighting!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These are the facts:
1.Jack and Meg are ex-husband and wife
2.Jack plays a 6-sting guitar
3.In 'Seven Nation Army' he uses a octave pedal
4.These two people's tab is right: TonePusher and Bob

cooldogg June 30, 2003, 0:06
