shouldn't the line be: caught a nine pound catfish(not cabbage)
actually, i was looking for the tabbed notes, for say the base and the melody parts i've already figured out the chords.
ho cakes not cold cakes
Great tab but whats the chords on the main chorus line? Is it all D? or is it D and A? Also whats the guitar tab when he says "play the blues" the little tab he picks out?
"Many fish bites if you got good bait,
Here’s a little tip that I would like to relate
Many fish bites if you got good bait,"
The cords for the "Im a goin fishin, yes I'm goin fishin and my babys goin fishin too," sounds like "d" to "a." "A" on the word "fishin" only in this chorus. try it.
Its a basic arpeggiated line. Simply fingerpick the notes out from the chords listed above for roughly correct sound. Although I can't quite hear it, I think throughout the song he will be using his thumb to play out the bass line on the bottom 2 strings (making use of the drop D tuning), and using the rest of his fingers to pick out the notes on the higher strings.
It seems like he'll play individual notes, but finish each bar plucking two strings together.
he plays this with the nitty gritty dirt band on the will the circle be unbroken volume III cd. there he plays it in F. they capo it on the 3rd fred in D. It makes the picking intro pretty easy to play.
I heard this song from the movie "What's Up Tiger Lilly." I thought this song was by the loving spoonfuls. If anyone finds out how to play the finger picking part, hit me up. :)
I listened to the version off "best of" and believe the chords from the chorus are:
(D)Many fish bites if you (D7)got good bait.(G)Here’s a little tip that I would (D)like to relate.(D)Many fish bites if you (D)got good bait.
(D)I’m a-goin (G)fishin’, (D)yes I’m a-goin (G)fishin’, and my (D)baby goin (A)fishin (D)too!
Great way to work tabs with
comments. Very helpful.
But am I crazy or does Taj
play this thing on the banjo
and not the guitar? What
does that do as far as
fingerpickin' advice?
Neet forum.
There are a few issues I can respond to. 1st, this song is a blues standard originally written by Henry Thomas in 1929. There is a verion by Thomas on the "Anthology of American Folk Music" collection on Smithsonian/Folkways records. I think Taj's version is the most popular.
There is also a pubished TAB (p.106) in the book "Fingerstyle Guitar" by Ken Perlman. Basically, there are a lot of pull-offs to achieve the melody notes.
I play this one in an open D tuning. This helps to alieviate the work of chord forming and allows one to focus on the lead/melody. As for the banjo comment: no, he's playing a resonator guitar (to be precise, a National O-series).
I heard him do a version that had this:
Went on down to my favorite fishing
hole, baby, got myself a pole and line
throwed my pole on in caught a nine
pound catfish,
took him home to my momma just
about supper time
- and -
"Put 'em in the pot baby put 'em in the
pan momma, cook 'em til they nice
and brown.
Get yourself a batch of buttermilk
oatcakes honey and you put those
suckas on the table - eat 'em on
down."
Which both scan pretty well - but I
gues being a blues tune you can mix
the words around any way you like...
There's a lot of debate on what kind of
cakes he says, but since I actually have
a recipe for buttermilk oatcakes, that's
what I'm going with... I too this one to
the lab, their good with fried catfish
too...
Hey all. What about a tablature post? The chords are good--but what about the tabs?
jkent is right they use a banjo, what were you all thinking? he uses claw hammer strumming when playing the bass line, alternating throughout the song.
no,no, no. it is NOT a banjo!!! it is a resonator, no banjo, no banjo. really, this one is easy to work out. tune the guitar in open d, or standard tuning and listen to the thum - get that and then the melody exists around the 'd' chord shape (in standard tuning), you barely even have to move you left hand. drop the e to d in standard and its even easier.
Taj helps he who helps himself. peace
Hey everyone thanks for your help.
Has anyone heard the John Martyn version of this eg...
"i went down the river by two oclock, spied that catfish swimin' around. I got so hungry didnt know what to do, figired i'd catch that catfish too.!
If any one could help me out with the picking on this one that be brilliant!!!
Also there is something not quite right about the chords over "im a going fishin...." bit.
Respectfully, it is played on a resonator - no doubt. Taj plays banjo very well, but uses a guitar on this. As proof, I offer the alternative version he recorded for one of his children's albums - identical playing, but on a regular acoustic guitar, not old "Miss National."
As for TAB, I have listed one source of actually TAB above. As others have noted it is rather easy to figure out -all of the melody notes are played on the strings comprising the D chord. Lastly, the above example is missing the G Chord in the chorus progression.
Good luck.
The melody on this one is very simple to figure out, so it seems pointless to have somebody waste hours tabbing it out. The important part is making sure that you've got the thumb playing a steady bass and are hitting the right chords, after that, any notes you hit with your other fingers will sound fine anyway. If you really want to play it exactly, sit down with a guitar and a record player and devote some time to it. You'll develop a better ear and when you're finished you'll appreciate the song more as well.
yeah i was just about to say that it's catfish.
First: It's not a cabbage he pulls out of the pond, it's a CATFISH. Also, it's buttermilk HOECAKES, so called 'cause they were first baked on a garden hoe; really!
Also, I play the song in C capoed up 2 frets to D. It plays pretty easy that way too. Peace
