Let me see if I can explain this right .
 To play the song ( A man of constant sorrow) correctly
you have to drop both the 1st and the 6th string to a drop D.
 then put your capo on the 3rd fret and play a D chord,alternating a
hammer-on bass line.
For the 2nd chord you place your fingers on the 5th fret up from the capo
on the 6th and the 5th strings and the 3rd chord play as an A position just
under the capo.
 This should give you the effect  of the acoustic version of this song
