She was 20 and I was 18
And I'd never seen life lived so mean
I drove from my side of town to the other side on down
And I learned that there's no inbetween

That summer my innocense burst
I satisfied my curious thirst
Where the welfare check buys beer and cigarettes
And cocaine and whiskey and worse

It [G] didn't seem right, it didn't seem fair

I couldn't change things, but Lord I tried
