Subject: CRD: I Ain't Marching Anymore Phil Ochs Chords/Lyrics

Phil Ochs I Ain't Marching Anymore written by Phil Ochs
                                                  Bob Gibson

G C C/B D
Oh, I marched to the battle of New Orleans
       G C C/B D
At the end of the early British war
    G C
The young land started growin'
    Am Em
The young blood started flowin'
    Am D
But I ain't a-marchin' anymore
         G C C/B D
But I've killed my share of Indians
     G C C/B D
In a thousand different fights
      G C D
I was there at the Little Big Horn
      G C
I saw many men lyin'
      Am Em
I saw many more dyin'
    Am D
But I ain't a-marchin' anymore
     C G
It's always the old to lead us to the war
C Em Am
Always the young to fall
    C Em
Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun
Am D
Tell me, is it worth it all
      G C D
For I stole California from the Mexican land
G C D
Fought in the bloody Civil War
      G C
Yes I even killed my brothers
    Am Em
And so many others
    Am D
But I ain't a-marchin' anymore
      G C D
For I marched to the battles of the German trench
     G C D
In a war that was bound to end all wars
      G C
Oh, I must have killed a million men
    Am Em
And now they want me back again
    Am D
But I ain't a-marchin' anymore
     C G
It's always the old to lead us to the war
C Em Am
Always the young to fall
    C Em
Now look at all we've won with the saber and the gun
Am D
Tell me, is it worth it all
      G C D
For I flew the final mission in the Japanese sky
G C D
Set off the mighty mushroom roar
       G C
When I saw the cities burnin'
  Am Em
I knew that I was learnin'
     Am D
That I ain't a-marchin' anymore
        G C D
Now the labor leader's screamin' when they close the missile plants
       G C D
United Fruit screams at the Cuban shore
         G C
Call it "Peace" or call it "Treason"
         Am Em
Call it "Love" or call it "Reason"
    Am D
But I ain't a-marchin' any more.
Am D
No, I ain't a-marchin' any more

My comments are based on the live recording made in Vancouver in 1968.

A couple of the chords are wrong in the transcription presented. In the third and fourth lines the C and the Am should be switched. This change should be made throughout all the verses. Just try comparing the sequence:

G C Am Em

with the correct sequence

G Am C Em

Also, lines six and seven only use the chord sequence of:

G C C/B D

once and not twice as indicated. This should be obvious because each verse only uses the above chord sequence twice and not three times as the transcription indicates.

By the way, the intro is very simple. It starts on octaves with the open D string and D played on the 7th fret of the G string. Play D C B A G A twice in rythmn with open D's thrown in where needed. The play similarly D C B A G C B A G again in rythmn and on the G string with open D's thrown in. At this point you form an Am chord and accent C B A G C B C D on the B and G strings while strumming the Am chord and ending on a D chord which you play for two measures before the first verse begins.
