I agree with the second version here. And, (just to add to the
confusion), I think there's a third riff I've heard that works off the C
chord in the song. Like this:
riff 3:
G-------------0---2-0--------------
D---------0-2---------2------------
A-3----3-----------------3---3-2-0-
E----------------------------------
If you've got another guitarist around, one guy can play the
riffs while the other does the Am -G-F-Am, C-Am-F chords. Hope this
helps

All right. This is how I've played this song. The chord progression I use is: Am - G - F - Am - G - F - C - G - Am - F

And
The riff goes:

[---------x2---------]
e-----------------------------
B-----------------------------
G-----------------------------
D-----------0-----------------
A-0---0-2-3----2-0---0--------
E------------------3----------

e---------------------------
B---------------------------
G-----------0--0-2-0---0----
D-------0-2----------2------
A-3---3-------------------0-
E---------------------------

e-----------------------------
B-----------------------------
G-----------------------------
D-----------0-----------------
A-0---0-2-3----2-0---0--------
E------------------3----------

Let me know what you think.

Thom you are close but I believe that it goes more like this.

E---------------------------
B---------------------------
G---------------------------
D------------0--0----------
A-0-0--0-2-3------2-0---0---
E---------------------3-----
Am G F
E--0--0-0--3-3---1-1--1-1-
B--1--1-1--0-0---1-1--1-1-
G--2--2-2--0-0---2-2--2-2-
D--2--2-2--0-0---3-3--3-3-
A--0--0-0--2-2------------
E----------3-3------------
