From: jayv@uiuc.edu (john v verkuilen) Date: 12 Jan 2003 05:58:42 +0100 "Overkill" by Colin James Hay from the album Cargo transcribed by Jay Verkuilen (jayv@uiuc.edu) The song as played on the album is clean, chorused, and delayed. It sounds rather like Strats into Twins or some similar clean tube amp (the classic Men at Work/Police early '80's tone we all know and love :). It works fairly well acoustic. There are at least two guitar tracks. One is a pretty straight rhythm. The other plays some "brittle" sounding atmospheric picked- apart chords with lots of delay. Intro (play twice): (Sax, possibly with a guitar in unison underneath--I can't quite tell) G5 A5 -------------------------------------------------- ----8-7---------------8-7------------------------- --------7-----------------7----------------------- ----------9~~~--------------7~~~------------------ -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Chords (all palm muted downstrokes, pretty much): G5 355xxx D5 x577xx F5 133xxx C5 x355xx Emin x7998x D x5777x C x3555x Verse (rhythm is dotted quarters for guitar, straight eight for bass): G5 D5 I can't get to sleep F5 C5 I think about the implications G5 D5 Of diving in too deep F5 C5 And possibly the complications (rest of verses basically the same) Chorus: Emin D Day after day it reappears Emin D Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear C D Emin C D Ghosts appear and fade away (come back another day) Solo (warm but clean, chorused, and delayed strat sound): -----5--------------3------------- ---8---8-7~~--3-5b6---5b6--------- --------------------------5-4-0--- ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- (Incomplete, the rest is coming soon :) Song structure: Intro Verse Verse Chorus Verse Verse Chorus (with "come back another day" inserted) Solo Chorus Verse Verse Chorus (with "ghosts appear and fade away" repeated) Jay -- J.
