Israel Kamakawiwo`ole was a very big man (600 pounds) with an aching
beautiful voice. It can be found on two CDs: "Facing Forward" (mostly
Hawaiian language songs with ukulele), and on the soundtrack to
"Meet Joe Black", where it played in the credits.
Listen to the original before attempting this, since IZ improvises on the

It can also be found on the CD Alone in IZ World, but it is a shorter version excluding the wonderful world part.
this song is also in the "finding forrester" cd but the chords are played in a much higer tone. this is a veery good tab but i wonder if sommeone could do it in the real tone. very good song.
IZ performs this song with ukulele. Great tab. It sounds more like the original if performed on the ukulele.

And i think it sounds more accurate if you fasten a capo at the 4th truss. Try out!
I capo it up to the fifth fret - it seems to sound better with the version of the song I have (more passible as a ukulele)
hye in the song it kinda sounds like theres a note before each chord if so can someone figure out which ones are which?
When I play it on the Ukulele, the first note which is stroke is the bass string of each chord. It almost sounds like on the original song !
Really great song. Also heard at the end of "Fifty First Dates". Best tab version I've seen can be found at www.learn-guitar.net by Lisa Frankel. This chick did an awesome job -- really nailed it. It involves a capo at the fifth fret and mostly G, D, C and Em with an occasional D7. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Did IZ play and sing at the same time, or somene else playing?
I find it difficult to sing while playing this rhythm.
this tab is good, pretty accurate I think. I reccommend playing the chords as triads on the 2,3,4 strings. If you know your triad inversions you'll be able to keep you hand in a small area around the 5th fret. There are a few chords in which it is really easy to add a note on the 1st string also,which make it sound a bit better....just play around with it. thats not my real email address up there....

Iz's voice is so spectral, like otherwordly plus the progression itself is beautifully simple. If you at least don't get shivers from listening to it, put down your guitars or whatever it is that you play and look for a carreer change. Hell just feel it! There was no freaking autotune by then. The man was gifted. And crying is not for panzies, I believe it's the ultimate form of amazement, so as not to sound too metaphysical. May I remind you it's all about emotion or else we're reduced to math!!!!

How does the strumming patter work? When hearing the song, it sounds like its a single pick (2nd string, 3rd fret) and then followed by 4 strums (down-up, down-up).
Is that accurate? What is the corrent way? And if it is a single pick, what string is picked for all the other chords?

This song definately sounds better on the uke...what I do for the base note is the C string (the second string from the top) before every pattern...and as for the strumming pattern, I find that this works:
bass string, down up, up down up
although I can never really get the last up because it's too fast.

Playing most of this arpeggio makes it fit well with guitar. It's a great tune, but without the ukulele, it won't have the same sound as IZ. I figure, since I don't want to go out and buy a ukulele just for this song, playing the chords arpeggio is a good compromise.
You don't have to buy the ukulele JUST for this song...I can't play the guitar for my life and I find the ukulele incredibly easy and really fun to play. I just like the sound it makes. Any piece of music that has guitar chords you can play with a ukulele if you know what chords they are (I have a ukulele chord book). It's awesome. I love it.

I have played the song on ukelele. To me the second chord is em, but it is played with finger on the second fret of the A string, the third fret of the E string and the fourth of the C String. The ukelele transcription provided before is pretty accurate though. Sorry, I haven't learnt how to post tablature yet, may somebody can advise me. All the best!

Now. That little bass note he plays is always the 3rd(G) string - no matter what the chord is.
Try this tab with these chords and the different tuning, and tell me if it doesn't sound just like the CD.

With the exception of Em / Em7. That's debatable. :)
Jeremy, I've seen video of Iz and it appears that he uses the low-G tuning, so the thickest and lowest string is #4, and his tenor uke remains then at GCEA.
Ah ha. Thanks Joe. That makes more sense. I originally tired to do that, but the nut on my uke wouldn't allow it, and I feared altering it. It was a gift from Hawaii :) I think if I had another one, I would customize the nut. It certainly would make that bass note easier to hit.
I have found that the Ooo part at the Begicing of the IZ version the beginning tabs are C Em Am F , C Em Am Am F F , C C Em Em F F C C F F E7 E7 Am Am F F then star the song. Is this Right? Let me know.
I think, that the second Am in the second row of the intro is grabbed like an F but with a G on the E string, i dont know the name of that chord but I think it sounds better than the second Am. try it

Hey, just thought I'd throw in my 2c,
In regards to the strumming, I find most similar this pattern for one bar of a chord.
In case you had trouble with timing, it comes out of your hand constantly moving up and down at the same rate whether your playing a note, chord or not strumming.
I find alternating between plucking the 5th and 4th string as the single notes in the chord very effective.
Basically you only play the chord on the up stroke, using the down stroke to either slap the strings (making the 'chk' sound) or putting in the pause between the two upstrokes.
So the strumming goes
* (\) / / (\) /
With * being a single note (fit this into the rhythm by down plucking it and coming back up before playing the chord), \ and / being down and up strums, and brackets being a muted strum.
Hope this helps anyone who was having trouble.

I read earlier here, that this is the only hawaiin song to be used in a movie, this is totally incorrect... True Hawaiin songs have been used in movies for years.. Also, this is not a Hawaiin song.. This is a song written for Judy garland to sing in the Wizard of Oz. The fact that it was recorded by a Hawaiin artist once, means not much. It was also recorded by Willie Nelson, that don't make it Country. hehe.. Anyway, as for bustin the chops for weepy eyed listeners.. Shoot, listen to the song, it's about dying and going to heaven. gee whiz, I cry too... And I'm as manly as it gets.. I also cry during Hallmark Commercials.. I am secure enough to cry.. I guess you aren't... Anyway.. That's all I have to say about that...

This tab can basically be played on the top 3 strings (G,B,E) using different variations of the D major and D minor Chords (using a D chord on any fret). If you play on a Classic guitar, it pretty much sounds just like the recording.

Hi this isa brilliant tab for the song i have been searching for ages. lots of people talk about different capo positions i find the best way to get the sound on a guitar rather than uke is to play barre chords starting with the C on the 8th fret
Hi all, my guitar instructor just listened to the song and figured it out in about 5 minutes. We used the guitar and all of his chords were bar corded centered around the 5th and 7th fret....He wrote them out but I'm not sure how I can show it here...I think I'll have to scan it in and add a link. He gets the muted ukele sound by only bar"ing" the 1st-4th string and not playing the 5th and 6th. The chord pattern is C, Em, Am, F, G, Fadd9, E7, Dm7. We haven't chorded out the pattern for the transition to what a wonderful world. Only a 30 minute lesson and takes a bit to write it out. I'll get it finished next Monday. I think he pegged the chording progression and the chording arrangement to keep the "sounds" of the ukelele intact.

Agreed...this is probably the most beautiful version of this song ever recorded. For all uke players... Iz uses a low G string on his tenor uke. This will give you the bass note you're missing-aloha

Not really sure why people feel the need to slate a song (they must be sad and lonely lets all pitty them)
My point is just that if you want to get closer to Uke version on the guitar just transpose all the chords. Whack a CAPPO 5 on there then follow the pattern. C=G F=C Am=Em Em=Bm G=D E7= B7 I think thats about it. It sounds very effective if you use folk strings like pro arte flat tops.

Everyone seems to have there own version of the song and that is quite alright. That is what we are supposed to do. This song is quite fun to play and it is much better on the uke with a low g tune on the g-string. Braddah Iz was truly awesome and if you want to hear a song of his that will make you cry check out Hawai'i '78 on Facing Future. Since I am a former wannabe guitar player that switched to the uke cause it is easier (personal opinion) does anyone know of any good uke tab sites? aloha a hui hou

Great work on this song, corrections or not I was pleased to find it. On a side note, where is the moderator, or site admin to delete a few of these annoying posts. Twelve year old children spamming curse words does something to spoil the best of threads. Thank you to all who had something legitimate to add to an already hard to find tune.
