This is not a Clapton song.
This is a Mason Williams song.
Yes it was originally done by Mason Williams, but also replayed by Eric Clapton

this tab is very good...though the mason williams version although is more technical..i find the other one to sound alot better...this one is for people who want to take shortcuts and go the easy way around.
You can download EC's version on KaZaA.Listen to this and follow the tab and come up with your own version. Great tune and great to play. Have fun.

Sorry to bother you im only 12. I can do the intro and all but I have no clue what a harmonic is. Help me out here.

You don't actually use harmonics in this, it means hammer on.
A harmonic is when you lightly touch the string above the 12th fret bar bit and pluck the note. It creates a standing wave on the string and makes a note one octave higher than the open note. there are more further down the neck too. on the 7th and 5th frets.
i don't think this tab is for eric clapton's version. there are bit's that aren't the same and i can't find correct tab for clapton.....?

Yah I chuckle at the negative comments here too! If you guys are looking for the real thing I suggest you look at real sheet music instead of relying on tabs to begin with.

Hey, it seems as though you copied this from mxtabs.net, except that you took out the bar lines and thr repeats signs. Also You didn't finish it.

About matt's reply to Ben's comment... there are harmonics on the 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 12th frets.
Forgive me, I have not been playing more than a few months, but I don't think it quite sounds right half way through the fourth bar. If I had an ear for this I might be able to correct it myself. It is right where the song picks up. Any help would be great. Thanks.
I am only 15 and have been playing guitar for about 7 months and I do not know what is it is about this song but I have to play it all the time. When you get the idea and feel of the song down it is easyer to play. I know many different versions of this song and I can play most of the ones that I have heard. After you get this version down move on to a harder version from some one else and if you still can not get Mason William's version down because it is to hard dont try to take it all in one bite, just go one step at a time. Chet Atkins has a very good version which is one of the best of Classical Gas. Don't Give up! Just Focus! I am 15, can't read music, and use my dad's guitar. Work on it and you will get it down.

this is a good tab, but i know for a fact that the Mason Williams original version is much more complicated.-----just fill in the bare parts---------
clapton did not do this song. he did produce a soundtrack that featured it, but if you do some research, you'll find out that clapton did not do this song. It's yet another misnaming on Kazaa (like the phish- gin and juice.)

Nobody follow this tab unless you want to play the song very wrong. This tab doesn't follow either MW or EC, and has been circulating around the damn internet forever. Listen to the song, it's completely different. Whoever did this was retarded or deaf.
I have the Classical Guitar Solo from Eric Clapton, it rocks! I played the first line of the tab and it sounds just like Eric Clapton :)

Ummm. Classical Gas was originally written/played by Mason Williams (not Eric, not Chet, not Lisa Simpson). It can be played (and sounds nice) on a steel string guitar. This isn't a full version, but is very workable. Also, this version is at least several years old being something I got off Olga in mid 1996.
This tab is like a lame duck. And not the metaphorical lame duck; but a real duck. that was lame. probably from stepping on a land mine or something. good tho

Look dude, if you are like 14-16 years old, you have a great future, but if you are not, well, it's sad but this tabs are very mediocre, they just "sound" like the song but it's way far to be at least close to the real one. And I just don't talk, I'm getting the song by ear, and it's about 90-95% almost exact as the real one. When I'm done I'm gonna share and see by yourselfs that I Rock!!

Gold danged! So many negative comments! First off, Eric Clapton never actually did this song, solo or not. Just because it's labelled that way on Kazaa doesn't mean they did it (Did Korn really do a song called "You're so"? No, Adema did one called "Unstable" though). Secondly, the version that this guy tabbed it after sounds almost identical to the tabs. I've been doing this for a while, and have a pretty good ear... When I can practice this tab without listening to the song, then play the song and never miss a beat I know it has to be close. The majority of the song repeats anyway so there is no point in going through the whole thing. You guys suck for being so negative and thank you dude for tabbing this for us.
Obviously people just put their comments on here without actually reading the previous posts! So in case you havent figured it out yet, this tab seems mostly right but for a few mistakes. Its also the same tab I got from another site, but, as stated before by someone else, the bar lines etc. have been removed to make it look like the dude's own work. That's shit you credit hog! But credit to the original transcriber, 'cos it's one of the best net tabs I've seen, even if it isnt for the Clapton version.

Yes everyone this is an excellent song, however this song is not so much about speed as accuracy.Playing it slow w/out mistakes sounds much better,focusing on the dynamics of the piece. Beginning with studies composed by 'Carcassi' is the better option, providing help with technique. Secondly this song is probably best learnt with the sheet music,as timing becomes an essential,adding to the piece,if played correctly.While this tab is quite correct, (no offense to the sender), it does miss a lot of the interlude-type section which plays a important part in the piece. Anyway, that's my stupid input. Cheers.

To be so critical of this tab is nuts. Good thing it didn't cost you anything...you'd really be upset and would probably smash your guitar Animal House style. Enjoy it and move on....you will improve.
give this guy a break instead of just cruising the net looking for tabs they actually got of their ass and transcribed one, so what if there a few mistakes in my opinion tabs off the internet should only be expected to be a guide or starting point, if you expect 100% correct go and but the book dude.....and clapton never did it, it was chet "the man " atkins also i would think it would sound hot on a steel stringer if you build up your left hand strengh and stamina
wow.. there's a lot of ungrateful people on here. Great job on the tab although sounds like a couple mistakes but they are easy to spot; the bulk of the song is definately there and that's more than i could have come up with. For those people who say they have played guitar for a few months and can play this song i find it very hard to believe.. Definately not an easy song. Playing this song with speed and feel is no piece of cake for me. Im more used to electric and picks and have been practising this on a steel string all day and still cannot get it right :/

Jose Feliciano also has his version of this one with and electrical guitar. Not as good as Mason's or Eric's, but Jose is also a fantastic guitarist.
This is a song I have always loved to listen to but never thought I would learn how to play myself. I've got the first few sections down after only 15 minutes. Awesome job putting this together!

First off, in 1968 Mason Williams originated Classical Gas according to records. This tab is good, very good, but it's not right. I've found over 20 tabs of this song and none are right, it's a very difficult song to tab. I want to learn to read music just so I can get the 'real' version.

There is a correct version of this song, on mxtabs. to anyone about to learn this song and reading these comments, try a different version this really is the worst version, ive been playing this song a few years now and spend alot of my time on fingerstyle stuff, i can confidently say, this tab was a good effort, but on the whole its complete shit. good luck
