HOTEL CALIFORNIA
Music by Don Felder & Joe Walsh
Words by Don Henley & Glenn Frey

Eagles
Hell Freezes Over
1994

Everyone and his brother has asked for this, so I'm putting it up.
A guy named John Senckowski was going to send me the tab, but I
figured it out before he got to it. Thanks anyway, John. Here I
have the intro, and the solos. The rest of the song is just
basically the electric version, toned down a little, and with
different riffs in the chorus. Good luck!

There are three guitars going here:
FREY 12-string acoustic, capo 2nd fret
WALSH 6-string acoustic, nylon string
FELDER 6-string acoustic, nylon string

This is the intro. Frey plays the top chords shown in parentheses,
while Walsh plays the bottom chords. Felder plays the intro riff you hear.

More things start happening here.
Frey's 12-string starts messing with picking patterns based around these chords:
        Am E7 G D9 F C Dm E7

Felder plays something similar the intro 12-string part with his 6-string, it's found on
my Hotel California page. He doesn't use a capo though.

Walsh plays this little thing after the first round of Felder's part:

   + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Here's where the vocals come in. The lyrics can be found here.
Felder and Frey keep doin' what they're doin', and Walsh sits
around and acts bored for the first verse. During the second
verse (There she stood...), Walsh plays the foreground acoustic
part. It is very similar to what's found in the electric version
here, except Walsh slides the chords instead of bending them.

Once we get to the chorus, Frey plays these chords:
        F C D7 Am F C Dm E
Felder plays this:
        G D F# "Fill 2" D Em F#

Walsh plays Fill 1, 2, and 3. If you listen, they are easy to hear:

Fill 1

Once we get to the "So I called up..." verse,
Walsh again plays the verse slides. When we get to the second
chorus, everyone plays the same thing again except for Walsh.
Walsh does: Fill 3, 2, and 4 (in that order).

During the "Mirrors on the ceiling" verse, Frey does the
same picking that he did in the intro, and Felder does the 7th-fret stuff again.
Walsh is bored until the "Last thing I remember..." verse, where he plays this,
and it leads into the solo:

Last thing... I was runnin' for the door. I had to find the

too complicated for someone who just wants to play and sing with his friends

bassguitar December 18, 2001, 11:32

complicated?... then maybe you shouldn't be attempting this kick ass song... it look pretty straight forward to me...

Viktor March 21, 2002, 18:01

This is really nice! sounds just the way it should... if you want it easier you just play the base chords (the ones walsh plays) =)

ive heard better renditions but otherwise done pretty well. for the solo, start with the d string at frets 8 then 9 and then continue on to your tabs for the solo in the end

Clay Mathes April 6, 2003, 1:03

Frey guitar would sound better with capo at 7th fret

Finally a good tab for this good song!
Putting just some chords on the lyrics is not playing the guitar but joking with it...

PERFECT TAB DUDE RITE ON THIS IS MY FAVROIT SONG TO PLAY. I STUDIED THE HELL FREEZES OVER DVD AND LEARND IT BUT THIS IS COOL IF U CANT FIGURE A PART OUT.thanks

MIKE

jak September 19, 2003, 17:42

Cool tab for whoever that figured this out. Must be a lot of work to put into this. Great job!!!

Little comments from me: Most of the parts are perfect. I think the second phrase where (G) A starts after the percussion does not sound quite right.

ruskov September 29, 2003, 17:49

This tab symbolises...the perfection of harmony brought by the allmighty Eagles, let me remind I'm not talkin' about those suckin' american terrorists, playing wargames all over the world!...

mick b October 9, 2003, 0:16

perfect tab m8 can;t stop playing it......

MC JK October 13, 2003, 15:50

i can play this song perfectly from the tab given above, i liked the song when i first heard it, its better than the electric vertion, but i can still see a couple of misstakes in the tab compared to the played version, when it comes to walsh's up and down strum patern on the solo. + felder must be playing with an electricly picked up classical to get that defined hammer/pull riff, i play it on my gibson-epiphone semi solid casino model , (copy of the ES335)well done though dude it took me a while to play this through and i think it was time well spent cheers :)

Gaston Haro October 28, 2003, 2:54

From Uruguay, South America
Really nice tab and very accurate to the song.
Go on guys
(I do not speak English very well so excuse me!!)

bob October 28, 2003, 3:10

hey, really nice tabs!It took me a while to learn it almost correctly and you did really a great job. we do not see very often good tabs on internet but yours is really great. keep it up man, long life to guitar!

bob October 29, 2003, 2:56

ok, just 2 or 3 litlle things. don't know if its the version of my song but in the intro there is like 2 or 3 errors. here are they:

--------------------
-------------3-5-6-7
-4-4h5p3h4-5--------
--------------------

-------7-6-----------
---7-9---------------
------------11-9-----

and finnaly...

-7-9-7-9-10-----
and not 7-9-10-9-10

thanks for your good work!

sarcasm November 11, 2003, 0:31

i love bob's comment, it totally helps me play the imtro, and make it sound good...btw great tab!!!

Very good translation. This is one of my favourite songs to play. If you are 2-3 guys and you play this song together you can create some magical moments...

sarcasm December 16, 2003, 2:55

i like cake, and this tab
p.s. thanks again bob

Paulo Barradas December 26, 2003, 21:47

This is a very good and accurate tab...
The only part I can't play is that with the "two hands tapping".

Louis January 16, 2004, 19:56

This is a very good tab man but i'm pretty sure that you've made an error in the first part of your tab. At the beggining, instead of the 4--4h5p34--5 you should play this 4-4h6-3-4-6 and then the rest. You should do the same thing during the part in the solo at the end when Felder plays it. Thanx a lot for an incredible tab!

Tina January 22, 2004, 1:57

this is as close as it gets.. Great tab!

amine January 29, 2004, 11:43

I WANT SOMDODY HELPS ME TO HAVE INFORMATIONS ABOUT HOW CAN I PLAY GUITAR PLEASE .....

Klaus February 12, 2004, 14:49

Hi,
are you shure the first two chords really sound like odinary B minor and A major?
To me the first one sounds more like 7 9 7 7 7 9 ,but can you figure out the second one?
Klaus

nico de hualpen February 26, 2004, 2:48

igual es complicado pero con talento se puede. es cosa de escuchar la cancion y listo.
tengancuidado con el punteo del final, esta bien escrito.

Prantu (Prakriteesh Sarma) March 11, 2004, 10:58

Greatest tab of the greatest song! I have not read a better-written tab. I am now able to play the whole song only because of you.It seems you are a genius. Great work. Keep it up.

Dietmar March 12, 2004, 21:30

I just printed it out and haven't yet begun trying to play it. For once I want to be able to do what the Eagles did with this song in Hell Freezes Over, and it looks as though you made that possible.
Great work man, great work! Thanks ever so much!

Nico April 26, 2004, 13:15

Great Tab! There are a few mistakes, but the solo is nearly perfect! I was so happy to find a tab of the unplugged version!

Phil May 21, 2004, 16:30

Don Felder rocks.I believe he was the brains behind most of the guitar parts. The band wont be the same without him.

slim June 4, 2004, 8:28

the best tab i have seen in aaaaaaagggggeeeeessssss

CB June 8, 2004, 22:53

Ok, so here is a newbie question. How does this work, like at the beginning of the song, when there is a Bm above the tab, then there is the tabbed portion below. Am I understanding that correctly as someone is rythming the Bm while another guitar plays the tabbed portion? Or do you play the Bm and adjust to play the tabbed portion?

Hapiness July 13, 2004, 19:31

WAT THE HELL! this sucks i played this and it sounded like my a cow dying ..now make it better

MR. Cool February 18, 2006, 21:47

guitar is for gay faggots that have no life

Mike M March 1, 2006, 3:23

Hell Yeah! This song Rocks!!!
It is not complicated just takes some patience and a little endurance to work it out, before long you'll start to sound just like the artists who wrote the song.Great material

yer March 2, 2006, 8:55

your tab is cool! can you email me more? like "i can't tell you why", thanks man!

RiChO March 11, 2006, 6:21

When i first saw this tab i looked firstly at
the solo and thought... man u got it all
wrong, all the tabbing is wrong , felder
starts it all out and then i saw the
title........Hotel California ACOUSTIC.. he
he he my bad this is the version from hell
freezes over.... which i actually wanted to
learn anyway so fucking good job

Andrew March 13, 2006, 1:58

Excellent Tab of an Excellent song. Very Accurate. But the Main part of the Felder part at the opening, is that played on a tweleve string? Because id like to play it but i dont know ur website. Thanks very much.

Taryn April 23, 2006, 18:26

I agree with Nikos...too complicated. And I can't find which one's the first/second part!! Tre comfusing...

Sean July 3, 2006, 8:15

When reading this tab, what does "h" and "p" stand for? I'm new to a guitar, just got one a week ago. Been playing chords and what not, and wanted to try some actual music. If I had to take a stab, I heard the term "hammer" which referred to a picked string being "hammered" down in a different fret to change the tune while the string is still resinating. and I would assume "p" stood for pick. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Jose July 10, 2006, 20:52

"h" means hammer on exactly like you said and "p" means pull-off which is pretty much the same except back wards... 7p5...you put one finger on the 7th fret and one on the 5th...pick the string on the 7th and then let it go so the string rings on the 5th fret...

pazif2 July 31, 2006, 4:30

i totaly agre with jose this is one of the best tabs your find for hotel califonia. one thing i would like to ask is y are you fighting over how a song is played. your not the one that right it or traclated it. if you do like it the find a simple song to play if you think its hard lol (if you find this song hard to play then you need learning to play)

roy August 23, 2006, 11:04

dude..i appreciate that u have tried..but ur fooling people here man..these tabs start of only wit a wrong note..it doesnt match man..loads of mistakes

Mikey Haun August 27, 2006, 10:08

Mizu March 23, 2007, 1:55

Okay, really good work.
People writing tabs should always indicate the rythm like you do.

This remerging ghost song awakes old stupid but pleasant feelings in me.
So, I want you !
