this song was originally done by Cat Stevens, but I learned the song
from Rod Stewart off of the "night on the town" album. It is a very
easy three chord progression. The beginning is just "C" but adding the
"F" note every second strum.

  "First Cut is The Deepest"
  (Cat Stevens) (Rod Stewart)

Intro:
Finger Picking intro and 1st verse:

e-------7-----------5------------3------------5---
B----8----8-----7----7------5----5-----7------7 REPEAT
G-7----------7-----------5------------7----------
D---------------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------------
E---------------------------------------------------
A D-shape without index finger then a moveable=20
Aminor-shape gets the job done.

chords
   C G
E----------------3-3-3-3-
A--3-3-3-3-3-2-2-2-2-
D--2-2-3-2-3-0-0-0-0-
G--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-
B--1-1-1-1-1-0-0-0-0-
E--0-0-0-0-0-1-1-1-1-

Play the intro four times over...then start singing on the "G"..

G C G F G
I would have given you ...
           C G F G
But theres someone who ...
         C G F G
and shes taken just all ...
           G C G F G
but if you want ...
          C G F G
babe I'll try ...

Chorus:
C G F G
The first cut ...
C G F G
The first cut ....
        C G F G
When it comes to ...
        C G F G
When it comes to ...

Verse 2:

I applaud all who take time to put together tab for this site. I hope i can someday soon do the same. However there is one very annoying habit many have... only giving parts of the lyrics. i don't see how it that much more time consuming to finish the line of a song instead of putting (....) at the end of the sentence. Not kmowing the words OK just say so and maybe someone will add them. sorry... enough bitchin'... thanks for the tab

Rob is right, i'd like to play this song and sing it to.
Does anyone know if the version of Sheryl Crow is played the same way of this one?

Tim January 2, 2004, 10:25

I agree with rob also, we need all the words, but apart from that, this tabs great. And jake, why the hell do u want any other versions, cat stevens is the only one who can play this song half decent, so stuff the other version. E tabs rocks.

Cheers

THE LYRICS

I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart
And he's taken just all that I had
But if you want I'll try to love again
Baby, I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know the first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to being lucky he's cursed
When it come to loving me he's worst

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
And I'm sure going to give you a try
And if you want I'll try to love again (tryyy)
Baby, I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know the first cut is the deepest
But when it comes to being lucky he's cursed
When it come to loving me he's worst

I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
But I'm sure gonna give you a try
'Cause if you want I'll try to love again (try to love again)
Baby, I'll try to love again but I know

The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
When it come to being lucky he's cursed
When it come to loving me he's worst

The first cut is the deepest baby i know
The first cut is the deepest try to love again...

To Jake: (Dec. 14) With the guitar at standard tuning (concert pitch) You can play along with Cheryl Crow in "D" That is, intro is D A - - And the song throughout is the same sequence - D A G A -- I think she sings the words "he's first", not "cursed" or "worst" ?? cros'

JAKE January 14, 2004, 7:31

Just want thanks Cros and Screwtap to help me play
this song.

Lucifer January 27, 2004, 18:10

I tried this and it seems to work better (on Sheryl Crow's version anyway)!
The sequence is : D A Em7 A
Just repeat the same chords for the chorus. The last line of the chorus should be D A Em7 (and stay on Em7...)

frank April 8, 2004, 3:22

To play S Crow version capo up one step (2 frets) and then play in C. the F switches between F maj and F maj6. play this method and its really easy. the intro uses a C cord with a hammer on F.

AF Guy July 6, 2005, 20:11

Thanks Screwtap for the lyrics. Nothing pisses me off more than tabs without the words.
