The machinist climbs his ferris wheel like a brave.
    C D G

        C D G
Behind the tent the hired hand tightens his legs on the sword swallower's blade.

Circus town's on the shortwave.

Well, the runway lies ahead like a great false dawn.
          C D G
Fat lady, big momma, Missy Bimbo sits in her chair and yawns.
    C D G
And the man-beast lies in his cage sniffin' popcorn.
        C D G
And the midget licks his fingers and suffers Missy Bimbo's scorn.
        C D G C
Circus town's been born.
C G

And the best roll-drummer go ballerina to and fro,
C
Cartwheelin' up on that tightrope.
C G
With a cannon blast, lightnin' flash, movin' fast through the tent, Mars bent.
       C
He's gonna miss his fall, oh God, save the human cannonball.
           G D

Missy flies and beanies watch Margarita do her neck twist.
C G
And the ringmaster get the crowd to count along, ninety five, ninety six, ninety seven.
        C D
A ragged suitcase in his hand, he stares silently away from the circus clowns.
         C D EM
And the highway is haunted by the carnival sounds,
        C D
They dance like a great beast and ghost on the wind.
                  EM G C
A man in baggy pants, a lonely face, a crazy grin.
         BM C EM
Runnin' home to some small, little Ohio town.
        G D C
Jesus, send some good women, to save all the clowns.
       EM G C D

And the circus boy dances like a monkey on barbed wire.
        C D G
And the barker romances with a junkie, she's got a flat tire.
        C D G
And the elephants dance real funky,
        C D
And the band plays like a jungle fire.
        G C
Circus towns on the live wire.
C G

And the strong man Samson lifts the little Tiny Tim up on his shoulders.
        C
Way up, and carries him off down the midway.
C G
Past the kids, past the sailors,
         C G
To his dimly lit trailer.
   C G
And the ferris wheel turns and turns, like it ain't ever gonna stop.
        C G D
And the circus boss leans over and whispers in the little boy's ear.

"Hey son, you wanna try the big top?"

"All aboard, Nebraska's our next stop!"
      C G
