                   My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gambling man
                   Down in New Orleans

And the only things a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
                   Is when he's all a-drunk

I've got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear the ball and chain

                   So mothers, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your life in sin and misery
In the house of the Rising Sun

                   Repeat First Verse

on the third verse, you have trunk and a-drunk. The way I've always heard the song is:
And the only thing a gambler needs
is a suitcase and a GUN
and the only time he's satisfied
is when he's on the RUN.
I was just letting you know

SHYTOWN June 9, 2003, 0:34

YOU MADE THIS PERFECT AND THE WORDS ARE ON THE MONEY AMBER

PEACE OUT
GOD BLESS................

commentator June 16, 2003, 5:32

Nigerachi June 24, 2003, 21:32

I'd like to say 2 things:

1) Amber, you are a fucking dumbass, go get a life and some new ears so you can hear the damn song you fucker

and

2) This tab is 100% perfect!! Great job tabbin and lyricing.

Great job.

cricket June 26, 2003, 8:45

the last E in the measures where you play the E twice it is an E7....for example...Am,c,D,F
Am,C,E,E7
Am,C,D,F
Am,E,Am,E7
also at the very end of the song when the organ takes over, it goes back and forth from Am to Dm7 4 or 5 times or whatever, and then the final chord is an Am7....002013.............
Hey people ! Let's keep this site clean......my grandkids view this site....

IkeMike July 20, 2003, 2:37

Hey Amber... if you would open your ears and actually LISTEN you would notice that the words you posted are WRONG.... and the original words are RIGHT...... just listen once...

Ruud August 13, 2003, 11:07

the set the words in the wrong way, that sucks, so I don't like this tab, it is fucked up ugly

chris October 10, 2003, 4:29

this is pretty accurate. one discrepancy: in the second verse, i always heard it "My mother was a traitor / she sold my new blue jeans". this isnt as stark a contrast as amber the moron, and i was just wondering as to its plausibility.

Thanks,
Chris

Bulla November 6, 2003, 19:05

Damn you Chris! Why would his mother sell his jeans? And lets face it, whos gonna buy em?? dumbass.

the real words to this song are, eh hem

"My mother was a sailor/ she sailed my new blue jeans"

you can all thank me now

JOHN November 15, 2003, 6:16

does anyone have any harmonica music to this, by the way well done

Anthony December 9, 2003, 13:09

I think the D is

E|---22---|
B|--3--3--|
G|-2----0-|
D|0-------|
A|--------|
E|--------|

Un4given December 13, 2003, 22:56

I think Anthony is right....Amber..are you death?...bulla and chris....you are both stupid....glen got the words right...by the way...great tab....it's as easy to play without one...but still....good job!
Peace!

Bill January 7, 2004, 5:29

i think the progression in the intro ends with E, C, E not C, E, E

Bill January 7, 2004, 5:37

my bad, the progression goes E, Am, E

stevie February 4, 2004, 23:44

This a sweet tab and this song rocks, by the way it's my mother was a tailor, she sewed my new blue jeans.

Mitch April 9, 2004, 22:20

Um, good job on the tab, but u hav the lyrics mixed up
"So mothers...." comes before "I've got one foot..." Just listen to the song

Smart_GUY June 23, 2004, 17:49

if you place commands do it when you are sertain you say something that is actualy correct.

there are more then 10 diferent bands who sang this song.
all them bands gave this song its own little touch by slightly changing the lyrics.

do you know to what band amber has been listening 2 ?

oh you don't! then dont flame him becouse he is actualy correct.

Why do you guys all gotta rip on amber so bad...she just made a mistake and put her opinion in, doesn't mean she is a dumbass...just means she fucked up, like we all do, I know i did, seriously though, everone is so hostile twoards people who get things a little wrong, give em a break, they are just trying to make stuff better...and now i sound like a peace loving hippy, but thats the booze talking...

Mr. T December 29, 2004, 22:23

Mr. Big February 6, 2005, 7:26

Joe May 19, 2005, 5:49

i think ur dicroded peace of crap and the tab is great

Willy Hammer February 24, 2006, 0:54

Hey Chris..go fuck yourself. You're a discrace to music mind you monkey ass.

mwilcox3000 March 11, 2006, 16:39

Different versions have different words. Bob Dylan even adds a verse or two. I think this is where the confusion over words is coming from. Could it be everyone is right (Nope - the Animals do have only one set. I'll let you all fight it out over which one that is)

stacy blood March 20, 2006, 2:13

everyone is right. so many different people have covered this. for example: david allen coe. lighten UP!

the one July 7, 2006, 23:55
