2004-05-09 | Radiohead, Pixies, Cure & Flaming Lips Rock Coachella Fest
The glorious return of reunited alt-rock legends the Pixies, Thom Yorke's triumph over a severe throat infection (which had almost led to the cancellation of Radiohead's Saturday headlining appearance), Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne's attempt to crowd-surf inside a giant plastic beachball, and a two-hour, festival-closing set of greatest hits by the Cure were just some of the highlights of the fifth annual Coachella Music & Arts Festival, held this past weekend in Indio, California. Not even the punishing, 106-degree desert heat, which could have made Coachella a true endurance test for even the most enthusiastic music fan, was enough to stop more than 100,000 people from flocking to this year's festival of nearly 90 alternative, hip-hop, and electronic artists. In fact, attendance was actually up 30,000 from last year, making the 2004 Coachella the most successful yet.

2004-04-06 | Kurt Cobain: His History And Legacy
Monday (April 5) marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Nirvana founder and frontman Kurt Cobain at the age of 27. Cobain, who killed himself with a shotgun in a room above the garage of his Seattle home, instantly joined the pantheon of rock legends who died too early, including Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Bon Scott, and more. Yet while many of those artists lived and loved the rock star lifestyle to the fullest, Cobain was branded as something that he, by all accounts, never wanted to be--the spokesman for an entire generation. It's widely felt that Cobain's inability to reconcile his inner demons and fear of "compromise" with Nirvana's massive success drove him to depression, drugs, and ultimately, suicide.

Cobain did leave behind a small, yet incredibly significant, body of music. Nirvana was one of many bands--including Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Mother Love Bone--to emerge from the Pacific Northwest music scene, where a mix of influences ranging from punk to New Wave to metal fused into what became known as "grunge." The combination of this heavily distorted sound with Cobain's pop sensibilities, plus the emotional pull of his vocals and lyrics, catapulted Nirvana to the front of the pack, giving the world and the media a face to put to the entire alternative music genre that got pulled into the mainstream in Nirvana's wake.

2004-04-06 | Slipknot Banned From Holding Hometown Concert
Des Moines, Iowa-based extreme rockers Slipknot have been barred from staging a hometown concert at the 7 Flags Event Center in nearby Clive City, according to TheIowaChannel.com. The Clive City Council voted 3 to 2 last Thursday night (April 1) that the group could not hold the Tuesday, April 27 show at the venue. Council members said they had nothing against Slipknot, but had to enforce an ordinance barring noise permits for the Event Center on a weeknight.

Local resident Connie Schmidt complained about the noise from the Event Center: "We cannot sit on our deck and carry on a conversation when bands are playing." Other residents spoke up in favor of the show.

2004-04-06 | Ozzy Osbourne Confirms Black Sabbath Reunion In Works
Ozzy Osbourne confirmed in a radio interview on Wednesday (March 31) that negotiations are underway for Black Sabbath to perform on this summer's Ozzfest, according to Blabbermouth.net. Asked if the rumors about a Sabbath reunion had any basis in truth, Ozzy replied, "I believe so." Ozzy would not confirm anything else, including the rumor that Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler had rejoined his solo band, because he apparently did not want to get "yelled at" by wife and manager Sharon Osbourne.

It's not clear at the moment whether Black Sabbath would replace Ozzy as the headliner on Ozzfest, or whether the headlining slot would be split between an Ozzy solo set and a Sabbath set.

3 Doors Down have announced they will play a benefit concert in Mobile, Alabama on March 27. The show's proceeds will go to children's charities along the Gulf Coast. 2004-01-04 | Toby Keith's New Year's Resolutions
After a somewhat controversial year that included public verbal feuding with Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines, Toby Keith says things will be different for him in 2004.

The singer shared his New Year's resolutions with LAUNCH. "No more Chicks questions," Keith said, laughing. "Probably just to concentrate more on the music. Another artist starts critiquing your music--that's kinda taboo, you know? There's a lot of stuff in the music business and a lot of songs that I don't like but I keep my opinions to myself. I think everybody should be able to do what they wanna do without havin' to worry about your peers steppin' out and sayin' so, so that kinda got under my skin."

2003-12-14 | Bette Midler Was 'Terrified' To Record Rosemary Clooney's Music On Grammy-Nominated Album
As a longtime fan and friend of the late Rosemary Clooney, Bette Midler approached her Grammy-nominated new album Bette Midler Sings The Rosemary Clooney Songbook with some trepidation. While she was happy to do some of her favorite songs, Midler told LAUNCH that she found it daunting to record them.

"'Course, I was terrified, because I didn't really think I could sing that material," Midler said. "Her voice is a classic voice, and, you know, the arrangements were sensational, and people who love that music love it with a real passion. And, I mean, I'm one of them, and I thought, 'Well, you know, I loved her, but I don't know if I could really step up to the plate on this one.'"

2003-12-14 | Fountains Of Wayne Thrilled With Grammy Nomination, But Find It Ironic
The members of Fountains Of Wayne were just as shocked as the rest of the world at last week's Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category. Lead singer Adam Schlesinger told LAUNCH he's thrilled about the nod, but finds it ironic considering the band has been around for more than seven years.

"I was told that it has to do with, defining it as the record that sort of gets you into the larger public consciousness or something," Schlesinger said. "So I guess, in that sense, maybe it's a fair definition. Yeah, this is our third record. Our first record came out in October 1996, so it's ironic."
